Our first apartment faced north, and every white we tried turned grey by four in the afternoon. Eleven sample pots later we understood something that no shopping list teaches: a room is light first, furniture second.
So we started writing down what actually worked — undertones, finishes, the layouts that survived a Tuesday. Readers wrote back with their own rooms, and the notes turned into guides, then palettes, then a small studio of writers, photographers and one very patient decorator.
We still test in ordinary homes with ordinary light. Nothing here is styled for a single photograph and then packed away.

Every room we shoot is lived in afterwards. If a piece would not survive a normal month, it does not make the list.
Prices, alternatives, and what we would skip. Affiliate links never change the order of a recommendation.
We would rather talk you out of four purchases than into ten. Restraint is the whole aesthetic.
